Policy Statement
At Chippenham Scaffolding Limited, we are committed to ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of all employees, subcontractors, clients, and members of the public who may be affected by our operations. We specialise in scaffolding services and recognise the significant risks involved in working at height. We are committed to complying with the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and all other relevant health and safety legislation, including the Work at Height Regulations 2005 and NASC TG20:21 guidance.
1. Responsibilities
1.1 Management
- Provide and maintain a safe working environment with safe systems of work.
- Carry out regular risk assessments and method statements (RAMS).
- Ensure scaffolding is erected, modified, and dismantled only by competent persons.
- Ensure all scaffolding complies with TG20:21 or has a bespoke design where required.
- Provide appropriate PPE and training for all employees.
- Monitor health and safety performance and review this policy annually.
1.2 Supervisors
- Ensure scaffolding works are carried out in accordance with risk assessments and method statements.
- Report unsafe conditions or practices immediately.
- Conduct toolbox talks and site safety briefings.
- Ensure daily inspections of scaffolds and maintain records.
1.3 Employees
- Follow health and safety training and site rules.
- Wear all required PPE (e.g., hard hats, harnesses, hi-vis clothing).
- Report any hazards, near misses, or injuries to supervisors immediately.
- Never interfere with or misuse any equipment provided for health and safety.
2. Training and Competence
- All scaffolders will be trained to the appropriate CISRS level.
- Ongoing training is provided to maintain skills and meet regulatory updates.
- New employees receive induction training before starting work on site.
3. Risk Assessment and Method Statements (RAMS)
- Site-specific risk assessments and method statements are created before work begins.
- Control measures are put in place to mitigate risks, including fall protection systems.
- All team members must read and understand the RAMS before commencing work.
4. Scaffolding Inspection
- All scaffolds are inspected:
- Before first use.
- After adverse weather conditions.
- At least every 7 days.
- Inspection reports are recorded and maintained on file.
5. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- The company provides all necessary PPE at no cost to employees.
- All PPE must be used as instructed and maintained in good condition.
- Damaged PPE must be reported and replaced immediately.
6. Emergency Procedures
- Emergency plans are established for all sites, including rescue plans for working at height.
- All employees are trained on what to do in an emergency, including fall rescue protocols.
- First aid equipment is available and designated first aiders are identified.
7. Welfare
- Adequate welfare facilities are provided on all sites, including toilets, handwashing, and rest areas.
- Drinking water is always accessible.
8. Monitoring and Review
- This policy will be reviewed annually or following a significant incident or change in legislation.
- Health and safety audits and inspections will be regularly carried out to ensure compliance.
